Can I Manually Change the Sentiment of a Mention?

Updated yesterday

Yes, BrandMentions allows you to manually adjust the sentiment of any mention directly within your dashboard.

While the platform’s AI-powered sentiment analysis is highly accurate, there may be times when you want to override an automatically assigned sentiment. This is especially useful when the AI might miss subtle context, such as sarcasm, industry jargon, or nuanced tone.

How to Manually Change Sentiment

Changing the sentiment of a mention is quick and intuitive:

  1. Navigate to the Detailed Mentions List:
Go to your Mentions Dashboard and locate the mention you’d like to edit.

  2. Find the Sentiment Indicator:
Each mention has a visual sentiment marker (a colored dot or icon) that shows whether it’s currently classified as positive, negative, or neutral.

  3. Click the Sentiment Indicator:
Click on the indicator to open a small dropdown menu with alternative sentiment options.

  4. Select the Correct Sentiment:
Choose the sentiment that best fits the context. Your update will apply instantly, ensuring your dashboard reflects the correct emotional tone.

When to Manually Change Sentiment

There are several common scenarios where human judgment outperforms AI and a manual adjustment makes sense:

  • Sarcasm or Irony:
Phrases like “Great, another software update that broke everything” may appear positive to AI due to keywords like “great,” but the real tone is negative.

  • Industry-Specific Language:
Some industries use words differently, for example, “sick” can mean “awesome” in gaming or youth culture.

  • Nuanced or Mixed Conversations:
In complex threads, one part of a mention may be positive while another is critical. A manual edit helps reflect the overall tone more accurately.

  • Ambiguous Mentions:
Some mentions are open to interpretation. As a human familiar with your brand, you’re best positioned to decide the true sentiment.

With BrandMentions, you have full control over how mentions are categorized. The combination of AI-driven automation and human insight ensures that your sentiment analysis is both powerful and precisely tuned to your brand’s context giving you the most accurate picture of how audiences truly feel.
