How Do I Create an Alert for a Specific Keyword or Project?

Updated over a month ago

Creating an alert in BrandMentions is simple, intuitive, and completely customizable. It allows you to decide exactly what you want to be notified about and how you want to receive those notifications.

Whether you want to monitor your main brand, a new product launch, a campaign hashtag, or a competitor’s mentions, setting up a dedicated alert is the key to achieving real-time awareness. Follow the steps below to create a new alert from start to finish.

Creating a New Alert

Follow these steps to create a new alert in BrandMentions:

  1. Navigate to the Alerts Section
From your main BrandMentions dashboard, click on the Alerts tab in the left sidebar. This opens your main Alerts dashboard where you can view and manage all existing alerts.

  2. Click the “+ New Alert” or "Create new alert" Button
At the top of the Alerts dashboard, select the + New Alert button. This opens the Create Alert window, where you will configure your alert’s settings.

  3. Choose Your Project
Select which project you want to monitor. The Project dropdown lists all projects you have created in your BrandMentions account. Choose the project that contains the keywords you want alerts for.

  4. Select Your Notification Channel
Decide how you want to receive your alerts. You can choose one or more of the following options:

    • Email: Receive notifications directly in your inbox.

    • Slack: Get real-time notifications in a chosen Slack channel.

    • RSS Feed: Integrate your alerts into an RSS reader for consolidated monitoring.

    • Webhook: Send alert data to a custom URL for automated integrations.

  5. Configure Your Filters (Optional)

By default, your alert will notify you about All Mentions within the selected project. Use the Filters option to refine your alerts. For example:

    • Limit notifications to negative sentiment mentions.

    • Focus on mentions from a specific country or language.

    • Track only mentions that meet certain engagement thresholds.

  6. Set the Frequency
Choose how often you want to receive notifications:

    • Real-Time: Get updates as soon as they happen.

    • Daily: Receive one summary per day.

    • Weekly: Get a weekly overview of your mentions.

(Real-time alerts availability may depend on your subscription plan.)

  7. Enable Spike Alerts (Optional)
Check the Spike Alert box if you want to be notified when there is a sudden increase in mention volume. This feature is especially useful for detecting viral trends or potential crises.

  8. Specify Recipients
Add the email addresses or select the Slack channels where you want your alerts to be delivered. You can include multiple recipients for team-wide visibility.

  9. Save Your Alert
Once everything is configured, click Save. Your new alert will begin monitoring your selected project immediately and will notify you according to your chosen settings.

Best Practices for Creating Alerts

  • Be Specific
Narrow down your keywords and filters to focus on what truly matters. This helps you avoid noise and ensures that your alerts deliver valuable insights.

  • Start with a Daily Summary
If you are new to alerts, begin with daily summaries. Once you understand the typical volume and tone of your mentions, you can move to real-time notifications.

  • Create Separate Alerts for Different Goals
Set up different alerts for different use cases. For example:

    • A real-time alert for negative mentions.

    • A daily summary for all mentions.

    • A weekly report for campaign-related keywords.

By following these steps and best practices, you can create a customized, automated alerting system that keeps you informed, responsive, and fully in control of your brand’s online reputation.
