The Audience Demographics report provides an overview of who is talking about your brand, keywords, or competitors across global web and social media platforms. To build this audience profile, BrandMentions uses a multi-layered approach that combines direct public author signals, outlet audience benchmarks, and statistical modeling.
BrandMentions estimates demographic parameters across countries, cities, and platforms using three primary layers of data collection:
1. Author Signals (Direct Data)
When authors publish public content online, they often share context about their identity. BrandMentions analyzes these explicit public author signals, which include:
Public Bios & Profiles: Declarations of profession, location, or personal interests in social media profile bios.
Public Names: Natural language processing (NLP) of author display names to infer gender distribution.
Declared Geolocation Data: Country and city location signals explicitly declared on author profiles or post metadata.
2. Outlet Audience (Publisher Benchmark Data)
Not all brand mentions originate from personal social media accounts; many come from digital news publications, media outlets, and industry blogs.
For domain-level mentions and online media articles, BrandMentions maps the known, aggregated demographic profile of the publisher's audience to the mention.
This enables accurate attribution for demographic metrics, such as age group, income tier, and education level, when individual author bios are unavailable.
3. Modeled Data (Statistical Inference)
Where direct author signals or publisher benchmarks are sparse, statistical modeling fills the gaps by evaluating platform source mixes and topic signals:
Source Mix Analysis: Evaluates the distribution of channels driving your mention volume (e.g.,social media vs. regional news sites).
Content Signal Processing: Infers primary audience interests, employment status, and age distribution curves based on keyword clusters and engagement patterns.
Geographic & City-Level Audience Tracking
Understanding where your audience is located helps optimize geo-targeted campaigns, local SEO, and market expansion strategies.
Country-Level Coverage: Tracks mention origin by mapping publisher domains and author bios to specific countries.
City-Level Breakdown: For high-volume markets (such as the United States), BrandMentions breaks down volume into key metropolitan areas (e.g., New York, Los Angeles, Chicago).
Population Estimation Modeling: In regions where explicit city-level metadata is absent, location estimations are projected based on population distribution and regional publication reach.
Data Privacy, Compliance & Accuracy Standards
BrandMentions prioritizes user privacy and international data compliance across all social listening and analytics features:
Aggregated Macro Insights: All demographic findings are aggregated into high-level audience trends.
No Individual User Profiling: BrandMentions does not track, store, or construct private individual user profiles.
Variable Geographic Coverage: Geolocation coverage varies depending on platform source rules, country privacy regulations, and selected date ranges. If confidence scores for a specific attribute are too low, the data is categorized under Location Unknown or omitted to maintain data integrity.
