When you are first entering your account, and you don't have any projects started, an image similar to the one bellow will appear. Click on Start your first project to begin tracking keywords.

If you already have projects within your account but wish to start new ones, click on the drop-down arrow near the project name, and after that click on New project.

Weather you're creating your first project, weather you are adding a new one, you have two options:

A. The standard project creation

Step 1. Add the keywords you want to track.

You can add here:

  • your brand name and most used variations of it

  • hashtags

  • your social accounts handles ( this will track both the mentions on the social account pages as well as the mentions from other people that tag you using that social account)

  • topics for industry analysis

For each tracked keyword, you have the possibility of performing the monitoring as:

  • exact match (we will track the keyword(s) exactly the way you've added it)

  • broad match (we will track your keyword(s), including synonyms, misspellings, and many other related variations, including mentions that don’t contain the exact keyword terms; this feature works great for topics tracking)

  • case sensitive (we will track the keyword just the way you add it, keeping count of capital and lowercase letters)

You don't have to limit yourself at adding only one keyword. Add more keywords relevant to your brand or monitoring purposes.

Step 2. Select the sources you want to track

By default, all sources are ON; yet, you can switch OFF any of the sources you don't want to receive mentions from.
You will be able to change the sources you want to track for your project later on within your project settings.

Step 3. Select the countries and languages you want to track

By default, all languages and countries are tracked. BrandMentions supports over 120 countries and languages. Depending on your subscription, you can create multi-lingual projects, meaning that you can track different countries and languages within the same project.

Once you finished adding the location to track, click on Start Project.

Your project will begin gathering mentions. This process might take a few minutes.

A. The advanced project creation

Step 1. Add the keywords you want to track

Step 2. Go to Advanced Setup

After you've added your first keyword, you can start the advanced setup for your project. Click on the Advanced Setup button to be redirected to a more complex project settings area.

Step 3. Configure your project

Within the advanced settings of the project creation, you'll have the possibility to setup several important sections: keywords to track, sources, languages and countries, social accounts, sites, and real time monitoring.

Keywords to track

Within this section you can add more keywords to track or you can add extra settings to your keyword monitoring.

As mentioned above, for each newly added keyword, you can choose from one of these monitoring settings:

  • exact match (we will track the keyword(s) exactly the way you've added it)

  • broad match (we will track your keyword(s), including synonyms, misspellings, and many other related variations, including mentions that don’t contain the exact keyword terms; this feature works great for topics tracking)

  • case sensitive (we will track the keyword just the way you add it, keeping count of capital and lowercase letters)

You can fine- tune even more the analysis by using these two options:

  • Mentions must contain any of these words

Add word(s) that you want all your mentions, or only a set of it to contain. For instance you can add a word and associated with a monitored keyword. This way, only the mentions containing both your monitored keyword and the keyword added within this section will be reported.

For example, I am monitoring the keyword "cognitiveSEO". If I add within the must contain section the keyword "digital marketing", only the mentions containing both "cognitiveSEO" + "digital marketing" will be reported. If there is a mention containing the keyword "cognitiveSEO" only, and not "digital marketing" as well, it won't be reported.

You can add a keyword here:

- as an exact match or case sensitive

- related to a specific keyword or to all of the monitored one

- found anywhere in the context of the mention or within it's proximity.

  • Exclude mentions that contain any of these words

Here you can add word(s) that you don't want your mentions to contain. Once you add a keyword here, the mentions containing that keyword won't be reported, even if your main monitored keyword(s) is present within the mention.

For instance, you are monitoring the brand "cognitiveSEO" but you add within the exclude section the keyword "digital marketing". Even if there are mentions containing the keyword "cognitiveSEO", if they contain "digital marketing" as well, they won't be reported.

You can add a keyword here:

- as an exact match or case sensitive

- related to a specific keyword or to all of the monitored one

- found anywhere in the context of the mention or within it's proximity.

Click on Add after you add a keyword anywhere within these two sections (must contain or exclude).

Sources

By default, all sources are ON; yet, you can switch OFF any of the sources you don't want to receive mentions from.

Language & Countries

Here you can select the countries and languages you want to track.

By default, all languages and countries are tracked. BrandMentions supports over 120 countries and languages. Depending on your subscription, you can create multi-lingual projects, meaning that you can track different countries and languages within the same project.

For a better monitoring process, you can also exclude mentions coming from specific countries and languages.

Social Accounts

Within this section, you can exclude mentions coming from specific social accounts on Twitter, Instagram, Facebook or Reddit. You can add the exact social handle, or you can choose to exclude all social accounts containing a specific word.

Moreover, if you don't want to receive mentions data on retweets, you can exclude here all retweets coming from any Twitter accounts.

Sites

Within this section you can add your brand web page(s). This way, it will be easier for you do identify your linked and unlinked mentions.

You can also exclude all mentions coming from a specific page or containing a specific word, tld, etc.

Real Time Monitoring

If your subscription allows, you can activate real-time monitoring. This way you'll receive mention alerts and data will be displayed within your account faster. Otherwise, the data will be updated once a day.

Once you finished fine-tuning your project settings, click on Start Project.

For both project creation versions, once the project is created, your mentions will begin to appear within the Mentions area. By default, you’ll get access to the mentions from the past 30 days, according to your settings. You have the possibility to extract the mentions from the last year, by using the Extract Historical Data feature.
