How to setup the keywords you want to monitor?

Updated over 5 months ago

If you're starting a project from scratch

When you first log into your account, if you have no current projects, you’ll be guided through the project creation steps. Here, you can add specific brand names, hashtags, social media profiles, topics, or any keywords you want to track for insights.

Once you do so, a pop up similar with the one below will appear.

If you already have projects within your account but wish to start new ones, click on the "+"sign that will redirect you to the same project creation steps as above.

Weather you're creating your first project, weather you are adding a new one, you have two options:

A. The standard AI project creation

Step 1. Add the keywords you want to track

You can add here:

  • your brand name and most used variations of it

  • hashtags

  • your social accounts handles ( this will track both the mentions on the social account pages as well as the mentions from other people that tag you using that social account)

  • topics for industry analysis

After entering a keyword, just press enter or next, so you can continue with the setup process.

Step 2. Select the languages you want to track

By default, all languages and countries are tracked. BrandMentions supports over 120 countries and languages. Depending on your subscription, you can create multi-lingual projects, meaning that you can track different countries and languages within the same project.

Step 3. AI keywords suggestion

The app uses AI to automatically analyze your keyword and suggest additional relevant terms to enhance your monitoring. You’ll see variations of your keyword, as well as related social profiles, websites, and more. You can easily add, remove, or edit any keywords you'd like to track.

Once you finished reviewing your keywords, click on Start Project.

Your project will begin gathering mentions. This process might take a few minutes.

B. The advanced project creation

During project setup, you can manually configure your project through the Advanced settings.

By doing so, you'll move forward to configure your project using the Advanced settings. In this section, you can adjust settings related to Keywords, Sources, Language & Countries and Real Time Monitoring.

Keywords to track

Within this section you can add more keywords to track or you can add extra settings to your keyword monitoring.

For each keyword you track, you can choose one of the following monitoring options:

  • Exact Match – Tracks the keyword exactly as you’ve entered it, without any variations.

  • Broad Match – Tracks your keyword along with other related variations. This also includes mentions that may not contain the exact keyword terms. Ideal for tracking broader topics.

  • Case Sensitive – Tracks the keyword exactly as entered, taking into account capitalization (uppercase and lowercase letters).

Additionally, for each keyword, you have the option to receive AI-powered keyword suggestions, edit it, or remove it entirely.

You can further refine your analysis using the following two options:

Filter Keywords

Add specific word(s) that you want to appear alongside your monitored keyword(s). This ensures that only mentions containing both your monitored keyword and the added word(s) will be reported.

Example:
If you're monitoring the keyword "Starbucks Coffee" and add "Chicago" in this section, only mentions that include both terms will be included. Mentions containing only "Starbucks Coffee" will be excluded.

You can customize each word you add by specifying whether it should be an exact match, broad match or case sensitive

Excluded Keywords

Use this section to filter out mentions that contain certain words, even if they also include your main keyword(s). If a mention contains any of the excluded terms, it will not be reported.

Example:
You're tracking the keyword "Starbucks Coffee", but you exclude the word "5 to go". Any mention that includes both will be ignored, even though your main keyword is present.

You can apply the same filters here: Exact match, broad match or case sensitive

Sources

By default, all sources are ON; yet, you can switch OFF any of the sources you don't want to receive mentions from.

Language & Countries

Here you can select the countries and languages you want to track.

By default, all languages and countries are tracked. BrandMentions supports over 120 countries and languages. Depending on your subscription, you can create multi-lingual projects, meaning that you can track different countries and languages within the same project.

For a better monitoring process, you can also exclude mentions coming from specific countries and languages.

Real Time Monitoring

By default, your project is updated once per day.

Yet, you can check the box Activate real-time monitoring and get faster updates & more mentions to enable continuous, real-time updates. This will provide you with the latest mentions and insights more often, ideal for time-sensitive monitoring.

Once you finished fine-tuning your project settings, click on Start Project.

Regardless of which project creation method you choose, once the project is set up, your mentions will start appearing in the Mentions section. By default, you’ll see mentions from the past 30 days, based on your selected settings. If needed, you can retrieve mentions from the past year using the "Get Historical Data" feature.
