How Can I Optimize My Project Settings for Better Accuracy?

Updated this week

To get the most relevant and reliable data from your BrandMentions projects, it’s important to fine-tune your settings. Optimizing your project ensures you capture accurate mentions, filter out noise, and get meaningful insights about your brand or topics.

This guide explains the key steps and best practices for improving your project accuracy.

1. Use the Right Keywords

Keywords are the foundation of every project. If they’re too broad, you’ll collect irrelevant mentions. If they’re too narrow, you’ll miss valuable data.

Tips for keyword optimization:

  • Include all variations of your brand name, products, and related terms (for example: BrandMentions, brandmentions.com, @BrandMentions).

  • Add common misspellings or abbreviations if people often use them.

  • Avoid generic terms like “marketing,” “software,” or “app,” unless they’re part of your brand name.

  • Use Broad Match for wider coverage or Exact Match for precision.

Pro tip: Start broad, then refine your list after reviewing initial results in your Mentions Feed.

2. Add Filter and Excluded Keywords

Fine-tuning filters helps remove spam or off-topic mentions.

  • Filter Keywords: Only collect mentions that include both your main keyword and these additional words (for example, “BrandMentions + reviews”).

  • Excluded Keywords: Block mentions that contain irrelevant terms (for example, “BrandMentions + coupon”).

Regularly review and adjust your filters as you identify new irrelevant terms.

3. Choose the Right Sources

Each platform offers different types of insights. Selecting only the sources you need helps improve data quality.

  • For brand reputation: keep news and social media sources active.

  • For product feedback: prioritize forums, blogs, and social media.

  • For competitor analysis: include news, blogs, and review sites.

To update this:

  1. Go to Project Settings → Sources.

  2. Toggle each source on or off based on your goals.

4. Refine Languages and Countries

If your audience or brand operates in specific regions, focusing your monitoring helps accuracy.

  1. Open Project Settings → Languages & Countries.

  2. Select the languages and countries that are most relevant.

  3. Avoid selecting “All” unless you need global tracking — it can introduce irrelevant data.

5. Enable Real-Time Monitoring

Real-time monitoring ensures you capture mentions as soon as they happen.

  • Go to Project Settings → Real-Time Monitoring and turn it on (available on certain plans).

  • This feature is ideal for time-sensitive situations such as product launches, PR campaigns, or crisis tracking.

6. Review and Re-Run Your Project

After making adjustments, it’s a good idea to reanalyze your project.

  1. Apply Changes → Re-Run Project.

  2. Choose whether to reanalyze existing mentions or apply changes only to new mentions.

  3. Wait a few minutes while the system updates your dataset.

This ensures your project reflects the latest keyword and filter changes.

7. Check Accuracy Regularly

Optimization is an ongoing process. Over time, new sources or trends may affect your results.

Make it a habit to:

  • Review mentions weekly to spot irrelevant content.

  • Add or remove filters as needed.

  • Adjust languages or countries if your audience shifts.

  • Compare your mention volume before and after changes to measure improvement.

Optimizing your project settings helps BrandMentions deliver cleaner, more accurate, and more actionable data.
By refining your keywords, sources, languages, and filters, you can focus on insights that truly reflect your brand’s online presence.
