In BrandMentions, a keyword is the fundamental building block of your monitoring efforts. It represents the specific word, phrase, brand name, hashtag, or social media handle that you want to track across the web and social media. By setting up the right keywords, you can gather relevant mentions and gain valuable insights into your brand, industry, or competitors.
How Keywords Work
When you create a project, you define a set of keywords that BrandMentions will use to search for mentions. The platform continuously scans a vast range of sources, including social media, news sites, blogs, forums, and more, to find instances where your keywords are mentioned. These mentions are then collected and organized within your project for analysis.
Types of Keywords
BrandMentions offers three types of keywords to help you refine your tracking and improve the accuracy of your results:
| Keyword Type | Description | Example |
| Keyword (Main) | The primary term you want to monitor. This is the core of your search. | Apple |
| Filter Keyword | A word or phrase that must appear in the same mention as your main keyword. | Phone |
| Excluded Keyword | A word or phrase that, if present, will cause the mention to be excluded from your results. | Fruit |
For example, if you set up a project with the main keyword "Apple", you will get mentions of the fruit, the company, and anything else related to the word "Apple". By adding "Phone" as a filter keyword, you will only get mentions that include both "Apple" and "Phone". If you also add "Fruit" as an excluded keyword, you will not get any mentions that include the word "Fruit", even if they also contain "Apple" and "Phone".
