What Counts as a “Mention” in Brandmentions?

Updated over a week ago

A mention in BrandMentions is any piece of online content that contains your tracked keywords. Understanding what qualifies as a mention helps you interpret your monitoring data accurately and make informed decisions about your brand's online presence.

Definition of a Mention

In BrandMentions, a mention is created whenever your tracked keyword appears in publicly accessible online content across the monitored sources. Each mention represents a single instance where your brand, product, or keyword has been discussed, referenced, or mentioned online.

Types of Content That Count as Mentions

BrandMentions captures mentions from various types of online content across different platforms. The following content types are counted as mentions when they contain your tracked keywords.

Social Media Posts

Social media mentions include any public post, update, or comment that contains your keywords. This encompasses posts from individual users, brands, influencers, and organizations across all supported social media platforms.

•Blog Posts: Articles published on personal or professional blogs

•Forum Discussions: Threads and comments on discussion boards and Q&A sites

Reviews and Ratings

Customer reviews on business and review platforms are counted as individual mentions. Each review represents a separate mention, regardless of whether it is positive, neutral, or negative.

•Reviews on Google Business, Yelp, Tripadvisor, Booking, and other review platforms

•App reviews on App Store and Play Store

•Facebook Reviews on business pages

What Makes a Valid Mention?

For content to be counted as a mention in BrandMentions, it must meet the following criteria.

Keyword Match

The content must contain your tracked keyword according to the matching rules you have set. BrandMentions supports different matching options, including exact match, phrase match, and broad match. The content will only be captured if it matches your keyword according to your selected matching type.

Public Accessibility

The content must be publicly accessible. BrandMentions cannot track mentions from private accounts, closed groups, or content that requires authentication to view. Only publicly visible content is counted as a mention.

Filter Criteria

If you have set up filter keywords (required keywords) or excluded keywords, the mention must also meet these criteria. Content that contains your main keyword but does not include required keywords or contains excluded keywords will not be counted as a mention.

Unique Mentions vs. Duplicate Content

BrandMentions uses advanced algorithms to identify and filter out duplicate content. If the same content is shared or reposted multiple times, BrandMentions typically counts it as a single mention to avoid inflating your mention count. However, retweets and shares that add new commentary or reach new audiences may be counted as separate mentions.

What Is Not Counted as a Mention?

Certain types of content are not counted as mentions in BrandMentions, including content from excluded sources (domains or social accounts you have added to your exclusions list), private or restricted content that is not publicly accessible, and content that does not match your keyword criteria or filter settings.

By understanding what counts as a mention, you can better interpret your monitoring data and gain accurate insights into your brand's online presence and reputation.
