How Quickly Does Brandmentions Detect and Display New Mentions?

Updated over a week ago

The speed at which BrandMentions detects and displays new mentions depends on your project settings and subscription plan. Understanding how mention detection works helps you set appropriate expectations and choose the right monitoring frequency for your needs.

Standard Monitoring Frequency

By default, BrandMentions projects are updated once per day. This means that new mentions are collected and added to your project approximately every 24 hours. For many brands and use cases, daily updates provide sufficient coverage to track trends, monitor reputation, and analyze brand performance over time.

Daily monitoring is ideal for brands that want to stay informed about their online presence without needing immediate alerts for every mention. It provides a comprehensive view of your brand's visibility while keeping costs manageable.

Real-Time Monitoring

For brands that need faster updates and more immediate awareness of new mentions, BrandMentions offers Real-Time Monitoring as an optional feature. With real-time monitoring activated, your project is updated much more frequently, allowing you to see new mentions within minutes to hours of their publication.

Real-time monitoring is particularly valuable for brands that need to respond quickly to customer feedback, manage potential crises, or track time-sensitive campaigns and events. It ensures that you are always aware of the latest conversations about your brand and can take action promptly when needed.

How to Activate Real-Time Monitoring

To enable real-time monitoring for your project, follow these steps:

1.Navigate to your project and click on the Settings tab.

2.Scroll down to the Real Time Monitoring section.

3.Check the box to Activate real-time monitoring.

4.Click Save to apply the changes.

Once activated, your project will receive faster updates and you will see new mentions appear in your feed more quickly. Keep in mind that real-time monitoring may be subject to additional costs depending on your subscription plan.

Factors Affecting Detection Speed

Several factors can influence how quickly BrandMentions detects and displays new mentions, even with real-time monitoring enabled.

Platform Availability

Different platforms make their data available at different speeds. Social media platforms like Twitter (X) and Instagram may provide near-instant access to new posts, while some web sources and news sites may take longer to be crawled and indexed. BrandMentions works to minimize these delays, but some variation is inherent to how different platforms operate.

Content Indexing

For web sources like news sites, blogs, and forums, BrandMentions must first discover and index the content before it can appear in your mentions. This process can take anywhere from a few minutes to several hours, depending on the source's popularity, update frequency, and accessibility.

Social Platform Limits

Many social media platforms impose limits on how frequently they can be accessed. BrandMentions optimizes its data collection to work within these limits while providing the fastest possible updates, but these constraints can occasionally affect detection speed.

Checking for New Mentions

In addition to automatic updates, you can manually check for new mentions at any time by clicking the Update Data button in your mentions feed. This triggers an immediate refresh of your project, pulling in the latest mentions from all active sources.

The mentions feed displays a timestamp showing when the last update occurred, so you always know how current your data is. This information appears at the top of the mentions page as "Last update [time]."

Balancing Speed and Data Quality

While faster updates are valuable, BrandMentions also prioritizes data quality and accuracy. The platform uses sophisticated algorithms to filter out spam, identify duplicate content, and ensure that only relevant, high-quality mentions are included in your feed. This quality control process may add a small amount of time to mention detection, but it ensures that you receive clean, actionable data.

Recommendations for Different Use Cases

The appropriate monitoring frequency depends on your specific needs and goals.

For general brand monitoring and long-term trend analysis, daily updates are typically sufficient. For crisis management, customer service, and time-sensitive campaigns, real-time monitoring is recommended.

For event monitoring, product launches, or PR campaigns, consider activating real-time monitoring for the duration of the event and then switching back to daily updates.

By understanding how mention detection works and choosing the right monitoring frequency for your needs, you can ensure that you have timely access to the information you need to manage your brand's online presence effectively.
