Why Do I See Mentions That Don’t Contain My Tracked Keywords?

Updated over a week ago

Occasionally, you may notice mentions in your BrandMentions feed that do not appear to contain your tracked keywords. While this can be confusing, there are several legitimate reasons why this might occur. Understanding these reasons helps you interpret your data correctly and ensures that you are not missing valuable mentions.

Common Reasons for Mentions Without Visible Keywords

Keyword Variations and Misspellings

BrandMentions is designed to capture not only exact matches of your keywords but also common variations and misspellings. If you have set your keyword matching to broad match, the platform may capture mentions that contain slight variations of your keyword that are semantically related.

Hashtags and Social Media Handles

On social media platforms, your keyword might appear as part of a hashtag or social media handle. For example, if you are tracking "Nike," a mention might contain "#Nike" or "@Nike" rather than the word "Nike" standing alone. BrandMentions recognizes these formats as valid mentions of your keyword.

When viewing the mention in your feed, the hashtag or handle format might not be immediately obvious, especially if the text is truncated or formatted differently in the BrandMentions interface.

Keywords in Images or Video Content

Some mentions may contain your keyword in image text, video captions, or other visual elements that are not immediately visible in the text preview shown in your mentions feed. BrandMentions uses advanced content analysis to detect keywords in various formats, including text overlays on images and video metadata.

While the keyword may not appear in the visible text excerpt, it is present in the full content of the mention, which is why it was captured by BrandMentions.

Keywords in Metadata or Hidden Text

Web pages and social media posts contain metadata, tags, and other hidden elements that are not visible to users but are accessible to monitoring tools. Your keyword might appear in page titles, meta descriptions, alt text for images, or other metadata fields.

BrandMentions analyzes these elements to ensure comprehensive coverage, which means that some mentions may be captured based on metadata even if the keyword is not visible in the main content preview.

Partial or Truncated Text Display

The mentions feed in BrandMentions shows a preview or excerpt of each mention, not the full content. If your keyword appears later in the text, beyond the preview length, it may not be visible in the feed. However, the full mention does contain your keyword, which is why it was captured.

Solution: Click on the Visit link to view the full content of the mention on its original source. This will allow you to see the complete text and locate where your keyword appears.

Boolean Query Tracking

If you have activated Boolean Query Tracking in your project settings, BrandMentions uses advanced search operators to capture mentions based on complex keyword combinations. This can result in mentions that match your boolean query logic but may not contain your primary keyword in an obvious way.

Boolean queries allow for sophisticated tracking scenarios, such as capturing mentions that contain Keyword A AND Keyword B, or Keyword A OR Keyword B, or Keyword A NOT Keyword C. These logical combinations can produce results that may not be immediately obvious without understanding the query structure.

Social Media Profile Tracking

If you have added specific social media profiles to your project, BrandMentions will capture all content posted by those profiles, even if individual posts do not contain your tracked keywords. This is intentional, as profile tracking is designed to monitor all activity from specific accounts.

If you see mentions from a profile you are tracking that do not contain your keywords, this is expected behavior. You can remove the profile from your tracking settings if you only want to capture keyword-based mentions.

Verifying Keyword Presence

If you encounter a mention that does not appear to contain your keyword, follow these steps to verify its presence.

View the Full Content

Click the Visit link on the mention to view the full content on its original source. Look for your keyword in the complete text, including any comments, captions, or metadata.

Check for Variations

Look for common misspellings, variations, or alternative phrasings of your keyword. The mention may contain a variation that is close enough to be captured by your keyword matching settings.

Review Your Keyword Settings

Go to Settings > Keywords to track and review your keyword matching settings. Check whether you are using exact match, phrase match, or broad match, and whether you have enabled any advanced features like Boolean query tracking.

Check Social Media Profiles

If the mention is from a social media profile, check whether you have added that profile to your Social Media Profiles tracking list. If so, all content from that profile will be captured regardless of keyword presence.

When to Adjust Your Settings

If you are consistently seeing mentions that do not contain your keywords and are not relevant to your monitoring goals, you may need to adjust your project settings. Consider switching from broad match to phrase match or exact match for more precise keyword matching, reviewing and removing any social media profiles that are generating irrelevant mentions, or adding excluded keywords to filter out specific types of irrelevant content.

By understanding why mentions without visible keywords appear in your feed, you can better interpret your monitoring data and ensure that you are capturing the most relevant and valuable mentions for your brand.
