What Are Filters in Brandmentions and How Do They Work?

Updated over a week ago

Filters in BrandMentions are powerful tools that allow you to refine and narrow down your mentions feed to focus on specific types of content. By applying filters, you can quickly find the most relevant mentions, analyze specific segments of your data, and extract actionable insights from the thousands of mentions your brand may receive.

Understanding Filters

Filters work by applying criteria to your mentions feed, showing only the mentions that match your selected parameters. Think of filters as a way to ask specific questions of your data, such as "Show me all negative mentions from the United States with high reach" or "Display only Instagram mentions that contain a specific hashtag."

BrandMentions provides a comprehensive set of filters that cover virtually every aspect of a mention, from its source and sentiment to its reach, engagement, and content. By combining multiple filters, you can create highly specific views of your data that align with your analysis goals.

How Filters Work

When you apply a filter, BrandMentions immediately updates your mentions feed to show only the mentions that match your criteria. The filtering happens in real-time, allowing you to experiment with different filter combinations and instantly see the results.

Filters are cumulative, meaning that when you apply multiple filters, only mentions that match all of your selected criteria will be displayed. This allows for very precise filtering. For example, if you filter for "Negative sentiment" AND "Instagram" AND "Performance score above 7," you will only see negative Instagram mentions with high performance scores.

Types of Filters Available

BrandMentions offers several categories of filters, each designed to help you analyze different aspects of your mentions.

Basic Filters

Basic filters are always visible in the sidebar and provide quick access to the most commonly used filtering options. These include Performance, Sentiment, and Language filters.

These filters are ideal for quick, everyday analysis and are the starting point for most filtering tasks. They allow you to immediately focus on high-impact mentions, specific sentiment types, or mentions in particular languages.

Source Filters

Source filters allow you to view mentions from specific platforms or content types. The source filter section displays all available sources with mention counts, making it easy to see which platforms are generating the most conversation about your brand.

You can click on any source icon to filter your feed to show only mentions from that platform. This is useful when you want to analyze social media separately from web content, focus on a specific platform where your audience is most active, or compare mention volume and sentiment across different sources.

Advanced Filters

Advanced filters provide access to more specialized filtering options that allow for deeper analysis. These filters cover aspects such as reach, engagement, influencer metrics, content analysis, and geographic targeting.

To access advanced filters, click on the Advanced filters section in the sidebar. This expands a panel with additional filter options that you can apply to your mentions feed.

Applying Filters

Applying filters in BrandMentions is straightforward and intuitive. The interface is designed to make filtering fast and efficient, allowing you to focus on analysis rather than navigation.

Benefits of Using Filters

Filters transform your mentions feed from a chronological stream of all mentions into a targeted, analytical tool. By using filters effectively, you can focus on priority mentions that require immediate attention, identify trends and patterns in specific segments of your data, compare different aspects of your brand's online presence, extract insights for specific campaigns, products, or initiatives, and save time by viewing only the most relevant mentions for your current task.

Filters are essential for making sense of large volumes of mention data and turning raw information into actionable business intelligence.

Best Practices for Using Filters

To get the most value from filters, start with broad filters and progressively narrow down your results. Use source filters to analyze each platform separately and understand platform-specific trends. Combine sentiment filters with other criteria to identify specific types of feedback. Use performance and reach filters to focus on high-impact mentions that deserve priority attention. Experiment with different filter combinations to discover insights you might otherwise miss.

By mastering the use of filters, you can unlock the full analytical power of BrandMentions and gain deeper insights into your brand's online reputation and performance.
