How Can I Combine Multiple Filters for Advanced Analysis?

Updated this week

When you’re tracking mentions in BrandMentions, combining multiple filters allows you to uncover deeper insights and spot the patterns that really matter.

Instead of just browsing general mentions, you can narrow down your search using specific criteria like sentiment, source, country, language, reach, or tags, all at once. This feature is perfect for advanced analysis, competitive benchmarking, influencer identification, and campaign performance tracking.

How to Combine Filters

Combining filters is an intuitive process in the BrandMentions dashboard. As you apply each filter, it adds to the existing set of active filters, progressively refining your results.

1.Start with a Broad Filter

Begin by applying a general filter, such as Source or Sentiment. For example, select "Negative" from the Sentiment Filter.

2.Layer on Additional Filters

Once the first filter is active, select another one. For instance, after filtering for negative sentiment, you could then select "News" from the Source Filter. Your mentions feed will now show only negative mentions from news sources.

3.Continue Adding Filters as Needed

You can continue to add as many filters as you need. You could further refine the results by adding a Country Filter (e.g., "United States") and a Reach Filter (e.g., "greater than 10,000").

4.Review Your Active Filters

The currently active filters are typically displayed at the top of your mentions feed, so you can always see the exact criteria that are being

used to filter your data.

Tips and Best Practices

Start Broad, Then Narrow Down: It's often best to start with a broader filter and then progressively add more specific ones. This helps you understand the impact of each filter as you apply it.

Create Personas for Analysis: Think about the different types of analysis you need to perform and create "personas" for them. For example, you might have a "PR Crisis" persona that combines negative sentiment, high reach, and news sources, or a "Brand Advocate" persona that combines positive sentiment, high engagement, and social media sources.

Use for Competitor Analysis: Combine the Keywords Filter (with your competitor's name) with other filters like Sentiment, Source, and Reach to get a detailed view of their media coverage and online reputation.

Save Your Combinations: Once you have created a useful combination of filters, you can save it for future use. This saves you time and ensures consistency in your reporting and analysis.
